As you may know we love our Kew Botanical Garden collection of terracotta pots and planters, in fact we can’t get enough of them (quite literally, demand always outstrips supply!). These pots and planters are the perfect addition to any style home; full of character and style due to their crackled glaze finish and wide range of colours you can colour coordinate them with whatever you choose to plant or display in them.
Where to Start
A little secret that some of you may or may not know is that not all of these terracotta pots and planters come with drainage holes. Therefore we’d like to show you exactly how to do this without causing damage to your elegant and much awaited pot or planter.
Choosing the right drill bit
- The first thing to grasp is that this is is not a difficult task and can be undertaken quite easily with few tools necessary.
- The second is to make sure you have the right drill bit for the task in hand. For non glazed terracotta and ceramics Masonry Drill Bits, for glazed pots Glass and Tile Drill Bits are best.
Masonry Drill Bits come in various diameters but remember the hole will always come out slightly bigger than the drill bit itself.
Glass and Tile Drill Bits can also be purchased at your local hardware store but are visually different to Masonry bits with a spear like head.
It is important to choose the right drill bit for the job in hand as they are not designed to be used on materials other than those intended.
Drilling the Hole
- Place a piece of masking tape or painters tape on the base of the pot across the point where you wish to drill the hole. This will prevent the drill bit from slipping and damaging your terracotta pot.
- Begin to drill slowly and steadily to avoid cracking the pot or planter. Don’t apply too much pressure, let the drill do the work.
How easy this is is very much dependant on the type of material you are drilling into. The good news is terracotta planters are some of the easiest to drill; so don’t be intimidated.
With a little bit of time, patience and a deep breath there’s no reason this can’t be done successfully by anyone.
