With Fairtrade Fortnight upon us we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to tell you more about what Fairtrade means and how we support Fairtrade here at The Orchard.

Fairtrade is a word we hear often but one that I guess few of us really know what it means.

Fairtrade in definition is….

a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seek greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South. Fair Trade Organizations, backed by  consumers, are engaged actively  in supporting producers,  awareness  raising  and  in  campaigning  for  changes  in  the  rules  and  practice  of conventional international trade.”

This in simple terms means that all producers certified under the umbrella of Fairtrade are paid a reasonable and fair price for the products they produce.  It also protects the workers by ensuring good working conditions whatever the country, while creating opportunities for diasvantaged producers.

Here at The Orchard we buy fully into the reason that Fairtrade exists. We stock a number of Fairtrade products which gives us the opportunity to promote the skills of those extremely talented individuals living in challenging circumstamces with restricted opportunities.

It is a great feeling that at The Orchard we can sell Fairtrade products knowing that the suppliers are paid a decent and fair wage for their work, that working conditions are safe and that children are not being exploited, so that we may sell these beautuful pieces.

Fairtrade products at The Orchard are hand made which sets them apart and means that someone is getting the opportunity to use the great skills they have to produce these unique pieces.
