As the days get a little colder and we prepare to turn the clocks back, it’s time to think about what we love about the long Winter nights. It’s all so depressing to be consumed with the ever-rising energy bills, snow threatening to close the roads and all of the bugs which are out to get us and leave us reaching for the tissues! So, we were thinking about what’s great about this time of year, and we kept coming back to weekends away in old fashioned guest houses that have a real welcoming feel.
Packed with loads of rustic furniture, and perhaps even a roaring log fire to boot, we just love stumbling across a real hidden treasure. So, here’s a few of our favourites which have enough rustic furniture treats to keep you smiling…
The Kilberry Inn, Kilberry, Argyll & Bute.
This is a little patch of heaven in the middle of nowhere! With vast skies and forested hills, it’s a walker’s delight. And the outdoor phone box is the smallest whisky bar in the world!
Farmers Arms, West Hatch, Somerset.
A lovely inn lost in the peaceful hills in Somerset. Outside, cockerels crow, cows graze and the glorious views drift downhill for a couple of miles. Inside, you’ll find plenty of friendly faces, sofas in front of an open fire (hurrah!) and a timber-framed bar.
The Beckford Arms, Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire
Expect to be seduced by this country-house inn that has risen again, phoenix-like, after a severe fire. Outside, the half-acre garden is ridiculously pretty and the Georgian house is equally sublime. Inside, the drawing room is filled with rustic furniture and warmed by a roaring fire.
Let us know if you’ve stumbled across a country pile filled with gorgeous rustic furniture and we’ll be sure to include it here.
