Wood Furniture – For Real!

There are advantages and disadvantages of real wood furniture over the more modern veneered pieces so here are a few things to think about when deciding whether real wood furniture might be the right choice for your home.

The most appealing feature of real wood furniture is that all exposed parts of the piece are made from natural wood.  This means that no cheaper cuts of wood such as plywood are used in its design.  This ensures its quality and durability.  Also high on the list of advantages of real wood is it’s practicality as the durability of real wood furniture is second to none and any scratches, dents and watermarks or stains can be easily rectified.  One disadvantage with a piece of real wood furniture is that due to its natural state, it is liable to expand and contract with heat, sunlight and moisture.  If the furniture expands too much, it can cause a split along the grain of the wood which can be unsightly.  A preventative measure would be to ensure that all real wood pieces are kept out of any direct heat sources and sunlight.  This means that you need careful consideration when deciding where to place your furniture.  Real wood pieces of furniture tend to be more costly than the more economic veneered pieces.  Veneer is much thinner than real wood which is accounted for in the cheaper price tag and this makes it prone to damage and also limits the ability to repair any scuff marks.

Once you have agreed a budget for your furniture, you may decide that it will be worth investing in a real wood piece which will last for years or prefer to buy veneered furniture which you may have to replace more frequently but the initial purchase will cost much less.
